Boyan Slat (1994) is a Dutch aerospace engineering student, entrepreneur inventor who creates technologies to tackle global issues of sustainability. He is the founder and CEO of The Ocean Cleanup, where he is responsible for overall strategy and cleanup technology development. Boyan Slat has always been recognized as an outstanding young entrepreneur. He has been selected one of the 20 Most Promising Young Entrepreneurs Worldwide (Intel EYE50), and was crowned 2014 Champion of the Earth, the United Nations' highest environmental accolade. Lead Oceanographer
Julia Reisser (1984) leads the oceanographic team and the ocean plastic research expeditions. She is responsible for increasing the knowledge on mass, distribution, and impacts of plastics across the world’s oceans. Initially starting her academic career in Brazil, she then moved across the world to do her PhD in Oceanography at the University of Western Australia. Her research focuses on understanding how ocean physical processes influence plastic pollution and marine life. Julia has led many research expeditions in the Atlantic, 2012; Pacific, 2013; and Indian and Southern Oceans, 2014 resulting in 15 publications on plastic pollution and biology topics to date.
